Head of Family Law

Location: Hybrid - Remote & Surrey-based office
Schedule: Flexible (3-5 days/week, part-time or full-time considered)

A unique opportunity has arisen for an experienced and visionary Head of Family Law to lead and grow a new family law department within a forward-thinking, values-driven law firm. This is a senior leadership position reporting directly to the CEO, ideal for a compassionate yet strategic legal professional who is ready to make a lasting impact - both within the firm and in the lives of clients.

About the Role:

As Head of Family Law, you’ll play a pivotal role in establishing and shaping the department. You’ll oversee the delivery of expert family law services, with a particular emphasis on domestic abuse matters, while also setting strategic direction, managing a team, and contributing to broader firm initiatives. This is a highly visible position within the firm and offers a clear path to long-term influence and professional growth.

Key Responsibilities:

• Strategic Leadership: Build and lead the family law department, aligning it with the firm’s broader mission and values.
• Legal Excellence: Advise on and manage family law cases, with a strong focus on matters involving domestic abuse.
• Client Engagement: Deliver trauma-informed, empathetic client care while building strong relationships based on trust and professionalism.
• Team Leadership: Recruit, train, and support a growing team of legal professionals, fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture.
• Business Development: Strengthen and expand relationships with referral partners, barristers, and other stakeholders.
• Compliance & Standards: Ensure the department meets professional regulations and remains aligned with industry best practices.
• Financial Oversight: Manage departmental budgeting and financial performance.

About You:

• 5+ years PQE in family law, with experience handling domestic abuse cases.
• Strategic thinker with excellent leadership and team-building capabilities.
• Empathetic communicator with a strong moral compass and a drive for positive change.
• Confident and competent, yet open to innovation and collaboration.
