Risk & Compliance Lawyer - Singapore
We are looking for a solicitor/lawyer to join the Norton Rose Fulbright LLP Risk & Compliance Team, based in Singapore. The Risk & Compliance Team is run by a Chief Compliance Officer who is assisted by risk & compliance lawyers and officers in three regions: London, the Middle East and Asia. The Asia and Middle East team is led by a senior lawyer based in Singapore (Head of Risk & Compliance, Asia & Middle East).
Our firm is required to comply with a variety of legal services and financial crime laws and rules across 26 offices in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Failure to comply can be a breach of professional standards or a criminal, or in some cases civil, offence. The Risk & Compliance Team is responsible for overseeing compliance with those laws and rules in order to avoid penalties and damage to our reputation.
The role will report to the Head of Risk & Compliance, Asia & Middle East, and in turn to the firm’s Chief Compliance Officer. Your work will be internally-focused, supporting Norton Rose Fulbright LLP’s partners as an in-house counsel. Some international travel may also be required.
The role will involve work across a broad range of risk management and compliance issues, including:
Providing senior-level advice to partners, fee earners and the Risk & Compliance Team on conflicts of interests, confidentiality and disclosure issues
Liaising with and assisting the Risk & Compliance Teams of Norton Rose Fulbright Member Firms in Australia, Canada, USA and South Africa in connection with potential conflicts of interest
Reviewing engagement and relationship letters, panel appointment terms and non-disclosure agreements produced by clients, and advising as to their acceptability
Providing advice to partners, fee earners and the Risk & Compliance Team on compliance with AML/CTF laws and regulations, anti-bribery and corruption laws, economic sanctions and market abuse laws
Advising on proposed directorships and other external appointments, client engagement contracts, arbitral appointments, and variety of other risk management and compliance queries
Producing high-quality training content and delivering to partners, fee earners and business support staff
Assisting partners and fee earners with the discharge of their professional duties and other regulatory obligations
Producing, reviewing and updating risk management policies and procedures
Managing and mentoring more junior members of the Risk & Compliance Team
Monitoring the development of legal services, financial crime and other relevant laws
Supporting the Chief Compliance Officer on other risk management and compliance projects as required
Skills and Experience Required
Be a UK qualified solicitor or qualified in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, South Africa or the United States
Have a minimum of 2 years’ PQE working as a qualified fee earner or in-house/risk & compliance lawyer in an international law firm
Be highly intelligent and have excellent commercial judgement
Have strong communication skills with experience of operating in a multi-cultural environment
Have sufficient influencing skills to work successfully & confidently at all levels including with senior management and partners
Be sufficiently confident to exercise risk-based judgement calls on a daily basis.
